As a home care aide, it is essential to know basic first aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) techniques in case of an emergency.

Here are some steps to follow:

  • Check the Scene: Before you approach the person, check the surroundings to ensure it is safe for you and the person.
  • Check the Person: Tap the person’s shoulder and ask if they are okay. If there is no response, look out to see if the person is wearing a bracelet or necklace that read DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) before shouting for help and checking for any signs of life.
  • Call for Emergency Services: If the person is unconscious or not breathing, call for emergency services (911) immediately.

CPR:

If the person is not breathing, start CPR by performing chest compressions and rescue breathing. This can help keep oxygen flowing to the person’s brain and other vital organs.

Basic life support (BLS)

Use an AED:

If an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it to help restore the person’s heart rhythm.

  • Control Bleeding: If the person is bleeding, use a clean cloth or bandage to apply pressure to the wound and control the bleeding.
  • Treat Burns: For minor burns, run cool water over the affected area. For severe burns, call for emergency services immediately.
  • Treat Broken Bones: If you suspect the person has a broken bone, try to immobilize the affected area and call for emergency services.

Remember, the goal of first aid is to stabilize the person’s condition until emergency services arrives. Therefore, it is essential to stay calm and follow these basic steps to ensure the best possible outcome for the person.
